Mahogany Soul

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Her sophisticated 1999 debut, Black Diamond, earned Angie Stone critical acclaim without making the very deserving singer and songwriter a household name -- which is nothing new for this neo-soul queen. In the '80s, the South Carolina native was a member of the female rap trio Sequence, and in the mid-'90s she flexed her vocal range as lead singer of the underrated acid-jazz group Vertical Hold, sang backup for Lenny Kravitz, and wrote and arranged songs for her baby's daddy, D'Angelo. With her sassy sophomore disc, Mahogany Soul, it's Stone's time to reap the benefits of her hard labor. Outstanding tracks such as the lovelorn "Wish I Didn't Miss You" -- which ...

Outstanding tracks such as the lovelorn "Wish I Didn't Miss You" -- which borrows its melody from the O'Jays' "Backstabbers," just as Diamond's "No More Rain In This Cloud" was built around a sample from Gladys Knight's "Neither One of Us Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye," -- display Stone's appeal. On that track, she pines, "Boy you forgot when you were down/who was around?," and there aren't too many women over 25 who can't identify. Although Stone can boy-bash with the best of 'em, -- note the self-explanatory "Pissed Off" -- she's also the first to lend the fellas her undying support, as on the Raphael Saadiq-produced ode to black men, "Brotha." Like the sister-friendly Jill Scott, Stone assumes the role of the black Everywoman with her knack for relatable storytelling and inviting vocal style. That winning combination makes the 16-song Mahogany Soul an engaging listen and may finally grant this polished Stone time to shine.

    People Please listen up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You Guys this Cd is great , without a doubt. But I ask you to please read the summary on her album. They label her a NEO SOUL Queen. I would like to say that labeling has to stop. She's an artist. Like many others. We can't just put labels on every artist. Artists like her, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu.....they are not the same. They are all there own. I hope we can all keep in mind how this shows American's society craziness. Thanks. (hope this doesn't offend the results of WTC.

    So good to hear it!!

It was so so good to hear a song with a black woman giving love and props to a black man! With all this cheating, hurting and hating each other songs out now this is a shocking and refreshing break! (Now if a Brotha could give the sistaz mo love?!)

    Soul Sista!

It seems Angies Stone has done it again, with Mahogany Soul....as if Black Diamond was enough. With the release of Brotha, she has truly pledged her undying love and support for our black brothers. Thanks to Angie Stone for helping us as sisters rise to the challenge......

    Destined to be a Classic

This is a great album. You can play it at work, in the car or just chilling at home. Unlike a lot of artist who dazzle you with the first single and leave you disappointed once you hear the rest of the CD, this album is consistantly good. Among the standouts are ''Brotha,'' ''20 Dollars'' and ''What U Dyin For.'' Actually all the songs are great even the gospel sounding ''Time of the Month'' about PMS There is no room for filler on this album. It is certain to be a classic. This is one you pop in your CD years from now.
