Openly gay Honolulu homicide detective Kimo Kanapa'aka is back, and is investigating a disturbing series of murders of seemingly innocent citizens. Kimo and his police partner, Ray, suspect a connection to a political movement that seeks to restore Hawaii to status as a kingdom, and wonder why their investigations seem to lead back to a chain of popular coffee shops. Meanwhile, Kimo and his boyfriend, fire investigator Mike Riccardi, are now living together, and tensions arise over the pressures of their respective jobs, as well as sharing chores, including walking a loveable but hyperactive dog that Mike brought home.
Author Plakcy seems to do his best work in this engaging series of realistic crime mysteries, weaving a witty, vibrant and realistic tapestry of Kimo's family, friends and colleagues, as well as Hawaii itself. A definite page-turner that is also as refreshing as an island vacation. Aloha, and five stars out of five!
