Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Challenged by her German-Swiss father, an 18-year-old New York City bicycle messenger in 1988 became the first American woman, and the youngest person, to sail alone around the world. In this jaunty account of her journey, she veers between the perils of solo sailing, her relationships with her separated parents and the death of her mysterious mother. Aebi, writing with freelancer Brennan, reveals her lack of sailing knowledge and experience, describes the heavy seas and weather she endured, her numerous problems with malfunctioning equipment, the countries, people and cats she encountered and a sympathetic French-Swiss whose boat sometimes accompanied her own. The story is so compelling that sailing enthusiasts will read avidly on to the triumphant finish. Literary Guild alternate; author tour. (Aug.)
Library Journal
This is the story of an 18-year-old New York City girl and her exciting solo circumnavigation of the globe on a 26-foot sloop with only a cat for company. Aebi had little previous experience, so most of what she learned was ``on the job'' and from people she met en route. One of the most appealing aspects of this particular single-handed sailing account is Aebi's naivete and the caring response that she encountered all over the world. Her 27,000-mile, three-year trek is usually attempted only by practiced sailors, and her survival was achieved by pluck, inventiveness, helping hands, and a good deal of luck. Armchair sailors will cheer and dream a little and veterans may only shake their heads. Recommended.-- Susan Ebershoff-Coles, Indianapolis-Marion Cty. P.L.

    Adventure at its best!

Maiden Voyage is the story of an 18 year-old girl who decides that after graduation instead of going off to college like everyone else, she is going to sail around the world alone. Inexperienced and scared, Tania takes off from New York on May 28, 1985 and doesn't return until November 6, 1987. Along the way she visits many exotic places and meets many amazing people. She learns to stand on her own two feet and experiences what it is like to see your life flash before your eyes.
This story is very inspiring and really emphasizes that anything is possible. I really liked feeling as if I was a part of the adventure and it's encouraging that a girl my age accomplished something so great. This story is about following your dreams, fighting the hard times, and finding your passion. Sometimes to get where you want to go you have to tackle the unfamiliar.
There was really nothing I didn't like about this book because every tragedy she faced was a lesson learned and every story told kept me wanting to read more. I would definitely recommend this book to all women because the author connects with the reader on an emotional level and it's easy to understand her feelings and what she's going through. If I had to rate this book on a scale from 1 to 10 I would probably give it a 9 because it wasn't my favorite book I've ever read but it kept me on my toes and showed me that possibilities are endless.

    World Travel

An amazing story about an 18 year old girl who sails around the world, alone, for two and a half years. It will make you laugh, cry, gasp, worry and wish you were out there doing it too. I'm living vicariously through the author on her amazing trip around the world. Meeting all sorts of people and traveling to destinations both industrialized and remote. Full of adventure and insight this book will make you feel like you are on Varuna experiencing all the ports and oceans first hand with Tania as your guide.

Reading an amazing story by another Aebi

I read this a few years back and it was like being at sea. Acutally, very interesting in the places she went, the countries she visited, and the people she met. It actually inspired me to start writing in earnest. While my stories have not made the best seller list, I still enjoy writing very much. Who knows, Tania and I could be rerelated?

    A brave young girl

This is a great story. I took it along with me on a cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am normally not addicted to reading, but I could not wait to find time to read this.

Thanks to this Book - We bought a boat

this book gave us the inspiration and guts to buy our own sailboat and sail away. We gave the book to our daughter, and within months (a year before us) she had left her ski bum lifestyle and bought a boat in Florida and was sailing to the islands w/ her boyfriend. Watch out, this book will getcha! I bought it for my grandfather so he could read about 'our lifestyle' until I got around to writing my own story. A REALLY GOOD READ!

    Adventure Lovers

When I read this book six years ago it made me want to buy a Contessa 26 and sail it around the world. This was my first taste of sailing adventure from a real life ordinary girl doing an extrodinary thing. I recommend this book to sailor and non-sailor alike. Much it the tale centers around thoughts and feelings we all share regardless of our sense of adventure.

    Unbelievably fascinating!

Hi All, Just finished 'In the Heart of the Sea'. It brought to mind, Maiden Voyage, which I had read last summer. Both gave similar feelings of wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Maiden Voyage was spectacular, inspiring and unbelievably fascinating. I strongly suggest reading in the heart of the sea as well as Maiden Voyage.

    fasinating

for the reader, the book was truly an adventure. i found myself, as i would pick up the book, getting exciting as if i was with her. with the book's feeling of life not being as complicated as the world makes it out to be, even the reader can feel tania's emotional and intellectual changes from living for 2.5 years away from the unimportant things that society creates for itself.
