KLIATT - Jennifer Feigelman
What could be better than having a ninja at your command? That's what little Timmy McAllister is about to find out. Timmy is considered a dork; he and best friend Herman Poindexter are tormented by the school bullies, and even Timmy's little sister joins forces with the bullies to make his life miserable. One day, when he comes home from school, he finds a catalog that offers a mail-order ninja. Unable to resist this, Timmy sends the mailer in. Two to three weeks later, ninja Yoshida Juro arrives and Timmy's life is instantly changed. With Yoshida in his corner, Timmy is emboldened to take on the bullies—and even his evil little sister! Laugh out loud funny and highly appealing, Elder's story is one that will charm many middle school students. Though a story about ninjas, the fighting is akin to that found on Saturday morning cartoons, and there is no blood or overly violence depictions portrayed. The manga-style illustrations will be an easy selling point for most kids—the high-action ninjas fighting, and the female characters reminiscent of popular Bratz dolls—that will make this volume fly off the shelves. Elder has created a highly likeable story—and after all, what kid wouldn't want his own ninja?

    Chockfull of Ninja Goodness!

Meet Timmy McAllister. a normal kid who lives in the 100% pure vanilla town of Cherry Creek, Indiana (pop. 23,745) where everyone and everything is . . . normal. Normal, until the day Timmy orders his very own ninja! As a little kid, who needs imaginary friends or even man¿s best friend, when you can have your very own Ninja? Timmy and the town of Cherry Creek will never be the same... That¿s the basic premise of 'Mail Order Ninja', which, btw, is 96 pgs of B&W goodness and is the brainchild of myself and artist Erich Owen. It¿s a fun, quirky all-ages comedy with plenty of action guaranteed to keep even the most ADD-addled youngster riveted. Now when I say ¿all-ages comedy,¿ I mean all-ages comedy. It¿s (I hope) like the classic Looney Tunes cartoons... I loved ¿What¿s Opera, Doc?¿ when I was a kid because Bugs dressed as a girl and sang all funny. Then when I got older I suddenly realized how clever the whole thing was with all the Wagner riffs and what-not. Plus Bugs was dressed as a girl and sang all funny. And that¿s hilarious no matter how old you are. Anyway, the current plan is for MON to run six volumes. And in those six volumes Timmy and his ninja companion Jiro of the Clan Yoshida will battle evil ninja lawyers, evil ninja accountants, Santa Claus and the French toy designer, international arms dealer and conceptual artist Jacques de Jacques. Like I said: quirky.
