Overview

Late July in the foothills of the Berkshires unites many of today's most inventive contemporary folk musicians and one of the most appreciative audiences around. No, it's not Woodstock -- it's Falcon Ridge. Billboard magazine has suggested that this folk festival might be the true spiritual heir of the seminal '60s gathering's, and the stars prove it. On this live recording, Dar Williams gives an informal version of her song "If I Wrote You," and Peter and Maura Kennedy contribute a lovely rendition of their album title cut "River of Fallen Stars." Like the festival, the disc celebrates the diversity of modern folk music, with edgy acts like Moxy Fruvous and Greg Brown's improvisational take on "You Drive Me Crazy." Viva Quetzal adds Spanish spice to the mix, and there's the chance to hear rising star Vance Gibert as well as accomplished tunesmiths Richard Shindell and Patty Larkin.

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
As the title suggests, Main Stage Live: Falcon Ridge Folk Festival showcases some of the concert's highlights, including Dar Williams' "If I Wrote You," the Nields' "James," Greg Brown's "The Poet Game," Viva Quetzal's "Mantaca" and Peter Mulvey's "Smell The Future." This compilation provides a representative look at the festival's diverse, yet distinctively folk lineup.
