Children's Literature
College-bound Colleen Templeton finds herself in an adventurous situation when her parents leave her and her friends alone for the summer as they jet around Europe. Colleen acquires more than cash over the summer working for the tiny Maine island's restaurant, Bobb's Lobster. Life quickly becomes a soap opera when Colleen's old boyfriend, Evan—who she has had little contact with over the past year—shows up just as the flame of new romance is sparked with Ben, leaving her to juggle her friends, responsibilities, and loves. On top of all this, she is struggling to adhere to her parents rules, including "No BOY sleepovers." And just like in the television world, Colleen somehow manages to maintain her sanity and enjoy the excitement she is experiencing the summer before she embarks on her college years. The author has created a cute and fun "girly" read—perfect for reading on the beach (as the cover demonstrates so well). 2004, HarperCollins Publishers, Ages 12 up.

As they say, "it ain't Shakespeare!" But this is a pleasant read for teens. Colleen is working at a restaurant on a small island off the coast of Maine the summer before she goes off to college. Her boyfriend from last summer, Evan, who didn't keep in touch, unexpectedly shows up, creating a dilemma. She's still attracted to him, but doesn't want to hurt her current beau Ben. Three's a crowd—hence "Maine squeeze." All's well that ends well, though. Light and entertaining. KLIATT Codes: JS—Recommended for junior and senior high school students. 2004, HarperCollins, 349p., Ages 12 to 18.

Gr 8 Up-Maine Squeeze focuses on a teen whose parents have decided to take a second honeymoon for 10 weeks, traveling through Europe. Colleen is allowed to have a couple of her friends stay with her at her island home, with 10 rules to follow, including: "No sleepovers. Especially of the boyfriend variety." Colleen finds herself torn between two loves: Ben, who was the one and only, and Evan, whom she fantasized about in times past. As love and life take on their own twists and turns, Colleen manages to barely keep her sanity, juggling house responsibilities, the attention of two flames, and the surprise of her parents coming home early to an unruly house. Good beach reading for teens who are looking for a light, sitcomlike romance.-Nicole M. Marcuccilli Mills, Glenview Public Library, IL Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
