Description: This 12th edition of a classic book on abdominal surgery in all its myriad aspects blends operative techniques and management pearls with a solid background of pathophysiology. The previous edition was published in 2007 and a revision is definitely warranted due to the rapid advances in the field.
Purpose: The book has "consistently offered a comprehensive discussion of surgical disease of the abdomen with a focus on operative strategy and technique" and "served as a needed reference to refresh our knowledge before a common operation or in preparation for a novel one." These are worthy objectives, which this latest edition continues to meet.
Audience: It is intended for surgical trainees as well as practicing surgeons at a truly international level. Thus, special care is taken to include discussions of entities that are common in other parts of the world but rare in the U.S. The editors are highly credible authorities and they have enlisted a stellar group of contributors.
Features: The book follows a standard and well-established layout, with a brief historical essay leading into a section on perioperative care and surgical techniques. Following Maingot's classic structure, a thorough discussion of the abdominal wall and hernia leads into the GI tract from esophagus to anus, with pancreas, hepatobiliary, spleen, and adrenal appended. Management algorithms are given, and both color drawings and operative photos are included.
Assessment: This classic book has always found a welcome place on the surgeon's bookshelf, and this timely revision amply continues the tradition. Rodney Maingot would be proud of this effort. It will be welcomed by trainees and experienced surgeons alike. Rapid advances in the field definitely justify this new edition.
