Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
Maisy and her friends share their love of a variety of things to eat in this board book look at colors. Vivid, bold colors are featured, beginning with really red RED on the left page and Maisy eating red apples on the right hand page. Tallulah, the duck, loves oranges and they really are orange. Charley, the alligator, picks bananas to show off “yellow,” Green pears are the choice of Cyril, the squirrel. Eddie, the elephant, considers a “…yummy blue ice pop…special treat!” This reviewer is very critical of color books that have “blended” colors or state that “yellowish-green” is really green. Here we see true colors. Each color does have two shades of the featured color shown by using darker silhouettes’ of the fruit and ice pop as a pattern on the basic color. The last double spread shows all of the friends gathered for a picnic of their favorite treats with a rainbow in the sky. The names of the colors are cleanly written in the appropriate stripe and in appropriate color spectrum order. This title is part of the “A Maisy Concept Book” series. Fans of Maisy will be pleased to recognize her, those new to Maisy will be delighted to discover the little mouse and her friends. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan; Ages 6 mo. up.
