It’s Christmas Eve, and snow is falling everywhere — on Maisy’s house, on her friends’ houses, even on Eddie! Everyone is invited to Maisy’s house for Christmas, so off they go in the snow, Cyril on snowshoes and Charley and Tallulah by sled. Luckily, it’s warm inside, and there’s plenty to do, decorating the tree, making mince pies, and wrapping presents. But wait a minute — where is Eddie?

The popular mouse stars in a picture book with a read-along CD narrated by Jane Horrocks: Maisy's Snowy Christmas Eve by Lucy Cousins. Maisy invites all her pals over for holiday cheer, with stockings by the fire, mince pies and decorations for the tree. But Eddie goes missing until the friends find him under a pile of snow. It is Christmas Eve and it is snowing. In fact, it is not just snowing but it is snowing very hard and it is very cold as well. All of Maisy's best friends are coming over to her house for Christmas. Cyril gets there using snowshoes and Charley and Tallulah get there on a sled. Eddie the elephant tries to get there on foot but he gets stuck and in no time, the snow starts to cover him up. Maisy and her friends start to celebrate Christmas by hanging up their stockings, cooking delicious food, and decorating the tree, but they soon get so worried about Eddie they decide to go out looking for him. When they find poor Eddie he is almost completely buried in the snow and his friends have to find a way to get him out. Once again, Lucy Cousins has created a charming Maisy book, which will delight Maisy fans and certainly hook any newcomer to the Maisy stories. Her bright and simple gouache illustrations have a universal appeal and give children the sense that Maisy and her friends are truly like them. 2003, Candlewick, Ages 3 to 5.

For years Lucy Cousin's childlike illustrations have endeared her characters to children and adult alike. Maisy, the main character, is a white mouse. Her friends are Charley the crocodile; Cyril, a brown squirrel; Tallulah, a duck; and Eddie the elephant. This holiday book features Maisy and her friends as they decorate for Christmas. Stockings are hung. But where is Eddie? They make mince pies and paper chains. But where is Eddie? Everyone helps decorate the tree. But where is Eddie? The repetition in the book will charm young children to participate in the reading of the story. In a while all the friends go looking for Eddie and rescue him from a snowdrift. This is a classic tale of loyalty, bravery, and compassion. I loved the use of bright primary colors and the simple drawings of sleds, tractors, and houses. As a teacher, I can envision some aspiring young artists trying to copy Cousins' simple pictures in their own artwork. Young children will love to read this book over and over. This book also includes a free storytime CD.
