Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jeanne Pettenati
What should Maisy wear when she goes out in the snow? In the rain? What should she wear to the beach under sunny skies? Young children learn about the different types of weather as they pull tabs and turn wheels along with Maisy as she greets the daily weather. New words are introduced on each page spread. For example, when Maisy goes out in the snow, she needs her "boots." In the rain, she needs her "umbrella." Activities that are appropriate for each type of weather are also depicted, such as feeding birds in the snow and flying a kite on a windy day. Maisy goes to the beach when it's hot and sunny. At the beach there is a cabana for Maisy to change into her bathing suit. With a pull of the tab on the cabana, voila! She's in her bathing suit. Maisy is agreeable in all kinds of weather. She smiles, even on stormy days, and her black cat friend accompanies her throughout. Each page spread provides a burst of primary colors; the text is large and age appropriate. This title is one in the publisher's " Maisy First Science" series. Reviewer: Jeanne Pettenati
Children's Literature
Maisy, the delightful mouse made even more famous by becoming one of the featured stamps from the United States Postal Service's Favorite Children's Books series, is the star of this superlative children's pop-up book. The author, together with paper engineer David Hawcock, never takes a false step. The front cover features a turning wheel that shows thunderclouds with lightening, a snowflake, the sun, blowing leaves, a rain cloud, and a rainbow. The opening double-page spread introduces the topic of weather by having Maisy open the curtains to see what kind of day it will be. The second spread shows Maisy approaching a small shed at the beach. When a well-marked tab is pulled, Maisy flips over, disappears into the beach house, and emerges on the other side in her bathing suit! Including the cover, with its turning wheel, there are eight pages of movable treats. The book is well paced for surprises, in bright colors with cheerful messages and just the right number of things to see and talk about along the way. I cannot think of a more perfect movable book for youngsters three and up! 2006, Candlewick Press, Ages 3 up.
