Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Beney, a pioneer in color travel photography and author of The Majesty of Savannah (Pelican, 1992), offers another fine entry in his series on Southern cities. The book contains little text, but the introduction and the lengthy photo captions offer an abundance of useful information. While most city guides simply enumerate the points of interest on a walking tour, Beney's splendid photos provide us with a more detailed look at the interiors and furnishings of Charleston's mansions, churches, and other public buildings. The map included at the back should be helpful to readers as they either envision the tour or actually make it. This unusual city guide should appeal to students of history, interior design, and architecture as well as to travelers to Charleston. With its modest price, it would make a nice complement to any U.S. travel or history collection and to collections that strongly support picture research.-- Elizabeth Loftus, Onondaga Cty. P.L., Syracuse, N.Y.
