Overview

Write Scenes that Move Your Story Forward

In Make a Scene, author Jordan E. Rosenfeld takes you through the fundamentals of strong scene construction and explains how other essential fiction-writing techniques, such as character, plot, and dramatic tension, must function within the framework of individual scenes in order to provide substance and structure to the overall story. You'll learn how to:

  • Craft an opening scene that hooks readers and foreshadows supporting scenes
  • Develop various scene types - from the suspenseful to the dramatic to the contemplative - that are distinct and layered
  • Tailor character and plot around specific scene types to better convey the nuances of your storyline
  • Create resonating climactic and final scenes that stay with readers long after they've finished your work

    A reviewer

Most writing books are either too simplistic or esoteric. MAKE A SCENE (to risk sounding like Goldilocks) is just right. A perfect mix of theory and practical, usable advice. Emphasizing 'The Scene' as the basic building block of fiction makes good sense emotionally as well as creatively. This book will help and encourage you. MAKE A SCENE is thoughtfully aranged and Jordan Rosenfeld's voice is cajoling, supportive and helpful. A solid book. A beginner should read it to see how to proceed a pro should read it as a reminder of the proper way to proceed. Imminently sensible and practical. Pick it up, it will help any fiction writer.

Good Thoughts for the New Writer

This book offers some great tips on how to bring a story to life. It gives tips on defining characters, setting, plot, and more. Useful for anyone thinking of writing their first novel. Provides examples from many great works of literature. I definitely recommend it.

    more from this reviewer

    Almost Indispensable

I started using this book after I was almost finished with my memoir, but went back over the entire manuscript with the book in my lap. The lessons it contains are so accessible and practical. Especially useful are the chapters of different categories of scenes, how you approach the scene, how you end it, how you transition to the next one-- all so helpful. Most of what I learned I was able to apply in small additions, subtractions and alterations. The examples are very good for clarification, but the sheer concrete advice is what I really valued. Every book on writing make so much sense until you try to apply it, but this one really spells out how to write a scene.
