A Word From the Author:
Who doesn’t love ice cream?
I love homemade ice cream, but I have no counter space (under or over) for an ice cream maker. They can be expensive, too, and my husband swears I have enough expensive kitchen gadgets…and he’s probably right. This time. ;) My grandmother used to have an old ice cream maker that you cranked by hand, but that was a lot of work, and I have no idea where to find one.
Well, it’s a good thing that you don’t need one to make ice cream.
You didn’t know that, did you?
You don’t need an ice cream maker to make ice cream. All you need is a stove, a refrigerator, and a freezer, and with your spatula, electric or stick mixer and a little bit of work, you can have rich, creamy homemade ice cream. It’s not difficult; my kids were making this ice cream at age 7 (with a bit of supervision), and they still make it today, especially during the long, hot summer days. It’s one of our favorite treats.
Because we want our ice cream to be smooth, rich, and creamy, all these ice creams are custard based – that is to say, they contain cooked eggs (except for the frozen yogurt, which is utterly and completely swoon-worthy delicious!).
I’ve included a step-by-step, easy-peasy recipe for ice cream and frozen yogurt made without an ice cream maker, tons of variations, and tips and tricks in this cookbooklet. Enjoy yourself, and experiment with these recipes. Have fun. Eat good food. Share your experiments with a friend. That’s what cooking is all about.
What are you waiting for? Go make some ice cream, already!
