Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janice DeLong
Although the format of this bright book lends itself to an audience below ten years of age, the content will engage older readers as well. The conflict in the story is between Fritter the kitten and the rest of the barnyard animals as a result of the resounding noise whenever Fritter naps. Much indignation is expressed by the other animals, from the rooster to the horse, when Fritter's purring sounds of contentment rattles the walls. Using this simple plot, Loewen instructs her readers in the art of story writing. Essential tools for construction are demonstrated: characters, setting, humor, imagery, word sounds (onomatopoeia), dialogue, irony, exaggeration (hyperbole), plot, suspense, use of emotion, and climax. Although this list seems advanced for the younger aspiring writer, Loewen interweaves Fritter's story with such skill that the lessons seem not only easy, but fun. This title is recommended for the child who wants to write as well as the classroom teacher who wants to present clear and simple examples of creative writing. Special features include a review page, Getting Started Exercises, Writing Tips, and a glossary. This is a part of the "Writer's Toolbox" series. Reviewer: Janice DeLong
