Overview

A simple practice taking ten minutes a day that will transform you and your life

OVER THE COURSE OF TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, Melody Beattie has become a trusted friend for millions of readers, and in Make Miracles in Forty Days she offers the ultimate distillation of what she learned about gratitude, surrender, and connecting with our essential power. The power to enact change, the ability to create miracles, she argues, rests within ourselves.

In her innovative, six-week action plan, Beattie helps us establish the miracles we’d like to create and then walks us step-by-step through her Miracle Exercise, which combines the most powerful spiritual and recovery principles into a simple activity that can be done individually, with a partner, or as part of a group. Along the way, she reveals her own experiences of making miracles, and those of the participants in her Miracle Workshop. These moving stories of overcoming hardship and finding acceptance and forgiveness demonstrate that transformative change is within our reach and inspire us to move forward with a renewed vigor for life.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - BookSmack!
Yeah, for serious, just don't let anyone see you reading this. Make a paper bag book cover for it like you did in the sixth grade when you were reading those Nancy Drew stories. Or hell, bedazzle it! This is a typical "female" self-help book, and I mean that in the best possible sense: it is well-intentioned, personal, and full of the author's deep altruism. Beattie wants very badly for you to be happy, so she shares her successes and the experiences of others in order to empower you to do the same. Is that so bad? In a nutshell: practice gratitude for everything around you; gratitude breeds positivism, which breeds optimism, which breeds productivity and success, which in turn breeds young rabbits by the hatful (they's good eatin'). But gratitude exercises are just the start, young Skywalker. The book goes on to relate Beattie's personal journey (as opposed to Neal Schon's Journey). Covering debilitating surgery and horrendous grief, she steadfastly remains grateful for all things, even the awful ones, and encountered many other people doing the same. The process of gratitude leads to growth, handling the problems instead of avoiding them, and eventually overcoming them. Beatty is a respected and well-reputed and well-loved author, and her writing is of great worth. Be grateful for it. — Douglas Lord, "Books for Dudes," Booksmack! 2/3/11
