Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Have a controlling mother-in-law who always manages to get in a few zingers during visits? What about a boss or co-worker who has passive-aggressiveness down to a science? Or perhaps you're blessed with a smarmy teenager who thinks helping out around the house means ordering pizza in for dinner? Admit it. There are probably one or two people in your life that you could improve your relationship with. I know. I know. Right now you are probably sighing and thinking there is no hope and you're not about to start pasting affirmations up all over your house.

Well, you don't have to, according to David J. Lieberman, Ph.D. In Make Peace with Anyone he gives you the tools you need to handle "any conflict, feud, or estrangement within a few minutes." All you have to do is look up your conflict in the Table of Contents and plug in the formula for that particular situation. This way, you don't have to fumble through the whole book when you need to know what to do right then and there.

Maybe you can relate to a few of the following examples on how you can:

  • Be forgiven by someone who wants nothing to do with you because you really screwed up.
  • Deal with that special someone who is never wrong.
  • Handle criticism.
  • End a family feud over money.
  • Reestablish a relationship after you've said something stupid.
  • Keep an argument from turning into a tornado.
This book makes it easy to settle a dispute and get along. Here is your chance to learn how to end conflict and make others and yourself feel good about it, too. Next thing you know, that will be your mother-in-law bringing casseroles, your boss singing your praises, and your teenager dusting and vacuuming the house for a change. (Jennifer Forman)

Lieberman (Get Anyone to Do Anything) shows how to do this and defuse a host of other common conflicts in Make Peace with Anyone: Breakthrough Strategies to Quickly End Any Conflict, Feud, or Estrangement. Lieberman guides readers through personality clashes, passive aggressive behavior, dealing with criticism and delivering criticism in such diverse situations as family feuds, workplace squabbles and marital discord. He stresses listening and showing respect as vital for dealing with most contretemps, but also includes last ditch emergency measures for the most intractable conflicts. ( Feb.) Library Journal
Lieberman (Get Anyone To Do Anything) outlines more strategies to help people get what they want from others even forgiveness. He believes that we do what we do to bolster our egos and argues that if we bolster other peoples' egos for them, then they are more likely to cooperate. For instance, Lieberman suggests that instead of snapping at someone who is criticizing us, we should instead ask for advice. He admits that engaging in such techniques takes practice and could be considered manipulative, but he asks readers to look at the larger picture: since they are being magnanimous, they are stronger, and since peace is gained, the way it was gained doesn't matter. He nevertheless insists that his techniques will work only for people who are truly contrite, which does reduce the Machiavellian factor somewhat. For public libraries.
