Overview

In this sharp and sexy new novel, Andrea Semple, one of fiction’s freshest voices, takes a wickedly funny look at the ways we reinvent our lives, undoing ourselves along the way. British cosmetics counter girl Faith Wishart can make up anything, from faces to whole careers and even boyfriends. And that's only the beginning...

Perhaps you’ve heard all about me?

I'm Faith Wishart. I made top marks at University and now I've got a simply smashing job at a top PR firm where I'm paid a royal amount for all my brilliant ideas. My high-flying friends are as svelte as insects, and my lawyer boyfriend, Adam, is as rich and handsome as he is thoughtful. At least, that's what my mum would tell you. Because that's what I've told her. And no one has to know that I made up every bloody bit of it.

I know what you're thinking, and yes, thank you, if there were a job market for great liars, I'd be CEO by now. Honestly, I didn't mean to do it. I only wanted to make Mum proud. It's just that without the lies, my life would look like, well, my life -- about as riveting as an IKEA instruction booklet. The truth is, I work behind the makeup counter at Keats cosmetics where the most exciting part of my day involves trying out new lipstick-eye shadow combinations. Not exactly a prime place to cruise up the old career ladder or catch a man. Well, not a straight one, anyway. And the closest I've gotten to PR is telling a woman she'd look good in mauve. Still, Mum's happy, so I'm happy.

There’s just one small bump in the road: my sister, Hope. She of the world-famous Yogasmic workout video series. She who went off to Australia and had exactly the sort of adventures I've been fabricating. She who is coming home to England to get married. Which means I have to be at the wedding. With Adam. Now, I've got exactly two months to make my fairytale life the real thing...

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Faith Wishart loves telling her mum all about her well-paid PR job and gorgeous boyfriend, Adam. Unfortunately, none of it's true. In reality, Faith lives a very unglamorous life, sans beau, in a disgusting flat and works part-time as a makeup girl. Excitement comes in the form of saving Frank, her alcoholic Neanderthal downstairs neighbor. Then her long-lost younger sister-star of the world-famous Yogasmic Workout video series-comes to town to get married, and Faith has to produce the make-believe boyfriend for the nuptials. In her hunt for the perfect Adam, Faith learns that she's not the only one hiding something and that everyone-her sister, brother, boss, and even Frank-has secrets. An uneven read, at times engaging but generally predictable, this is not even on par with other Bridget Jones wannabes. U.K. writer Semple's second novel is recommended only where her debut, The Ex-Factor, was popular.-Anika Fajardo, Coll. of St. Catherine Lib., St. Paul, MN Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    The Makeup Girl

This book is a story about a girl named Faith who lies to her mother about having a successful boyfriend and a great job working at a top PR firm because she wants her mom to be proud of her and to be happy. In reality, Faith is boyfriendless and works as a makeup counter girl. So when she learns that her younger, successful, sister is getting married and she has to attend the wedding with her "boyfriend", Faith has to find a way to turn her lies into truths. The Makeup girl is a fun, great chick lit book that I couldn't put down!! It will make you laugh with its British humor. A perfect beach read!

    A Great Quick Read

In this book Faith Wishart lies a lot to her mom to make her proud. What turns out to be a nightmare rather than just a tale is that her mom wants to meet her made-up boyfriend Adam. She then goes to the gym and meets a guy named Adam and he turns out to be wacky. and when her comes to her flat a scandle happends and she is saved by her neighbor frank (she saved his life). Her mom comes to visit and Faith has Frank play the role of Adam and what was just a lie turns out to be something more! i recommend this book to any one who has problems telling little white lies!-Jesikah

    wonderful English romantic romp

Not wanting to tell her beloved mom the truth that she is a complete loser, Faith Wishart makes up a false life in which she is the idea creator at a Leeds public relations firm and has a wealthy handsome boyfriend, attorney Adam. Instead she is just THE MAKEUP GIRL working part-time at the cosmetic counter of Blake¿s Department Store and has no luck with men. --- Her sister Hope returns from Australia after an international success at Yoga videos to marry a rich hunk Faith panics because she must bring Adam to the wedding. She lies on her résumé trying to get a job at the biggest PR firm outside of London though one of her bosses died before she worked for him. Still the clock is ticking and though distraught, Faith still treats all her customers with respect even taking the time to listen to geriatric Josie tell her family stories. Her luck seems a bit better when she meets Frank, who she likes, but he is no lawyer. --- Faith makes this chick lit tale hum as readers will empathize with the web of lies that she is entangled with all because she wanted her mother to be proud of her. Her desperate escapades fail as the clock winds down, but with all her woes and with the probability of being humiliated when her life is exposed as a sham seeming inevitable, Faith still gives her work at the cosmetic counter everything she can she cares about her customers especially the repeaters. Frank is a nice person who has a million secrets of his own. Andrea Semple provides a wonderful English romantic romp that sub-genre fans will treasure. --- Harriet Klausner
