Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Though not as prolific as his contemporaries, Robert McCloskey has carved out a place of his own in children's literature. This treasury comprising seven full-text stories and one excerpt from his longer work, Centerburg Tales, gives evidence that the two-time Caldecott winning artist has created timeless classics and continues to endear himself to generations of readers. Snuggling up with this title is prohibitive due to its size and heft. A more practical audience would be older readers reminiscing about a childhood sprinkled with these favorites. Before and following the stories are snippets of McCloskey's life and a brief biography, complete with photos that give a glimpse into the man, the father, and the artist. (McCloskey's daughters were often models for his books.) From a parade of ducklings, to a can of undetectable "gas" to the wonder of a Northeastern island storm, this book is a great escape to an era that held more charm and simplicity. 2004, Viking/Penguin Young Readers Group, Ages all.

Meet the Author

Robert McCloskey (1914-2003) wrote and illustrated some of the most honored and enduring children's books ever published. He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and spent time in Boston, New York, and ultimately Maine, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. The first ever two-time Caldecott Medal winner, for Make Way for Ducklings and Time of Wonder, McCloskey was also awarded Caldecott Honors for Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, and Journey Cake, Ho! by Ruth Sawyer.  He was declared a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000.  You can see some of his best-loved characters immortalized as statues in Boston's Public Garden and Lentil Park in Hamilton, Ohio.
