Overview

From DK Publishing and Smithsonian. Make Your Own T. Rex combines everything you need to make a model Tyrannosaurus Rex with an exciting and informative book about dinosaurs.

The model comprises 80 sturdy photographic "bones" that press out from 11 boards and slot together without the need for glue — so there's no waste and no excess packaging. In addition to containing clear step-by-step instructions of how to build the Tyrannosaurus Rex model while exploring the anatomy, the book also explores behavior, and the environment of the perennially popular prehistoric reptiles.

Over 2 feet long when assembled, the model is based on a real Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton and is easy to build following the step-by-step instructions in the book. While focusing on different dinosaur anatomy for each stage of constructing the model, the book also answers questions like "why did some dinosaurs stand upright while others walked on all fours?", "why did dinosaurs have different horns and frills?", and "what was the world like when dinosaurs ruled the earth?"

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Not only does this kit give children an opportunity to build a T. Rex model; it invites them to learn a great deal of information about a fascinating predator from long ago. The approximately 200 bones of the T. Rex's body are shown in this 71-piece model. Instructions are provided step-by-step and piece-by-piece along the bottom half of each page, with a wealth of information accompanying it on the top portion. Readers learn that the T. Rex is estimated to have had a top speed of 22 mph and that this is "about the speed of an Olympic sprinter." They find that the fierce predator could chomp through "500 lb of meat" in one bite and that this is "about three adult humans." They also learn that scientists have changed their theories about the dinosaur's stance in recent years, and that they now believe that rather than standing upright, it leaned forward and used its tail as a counterbalance. Budding paleontologists will appreciate information about research methodology and investigative processes. Children who enjoy dinosaurs will love this kit, as will those who like to build puzzles. Although the package states that it is for children seven years and older, a five year old could manage this with adult supervision (and some minimal assistance). The directions are top-notch, and many steps are shown from many perspectives. The model itself is sturdy, and high-quality. Highly recommended. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green

This book was an impulse buy when we were having trouble finding a gift for our 4 year old daughter to give our 7 year old son for Christmas. It got set aside for about a month, because in our experience, building models has always been a fun activity in theory, but always more of a hassle in reality. When our son finally pulled Make Your Own T-Rex off the shelf and we saw how many pieces were in the box, I admit, I was intimidated.  But like another reviewer said, we put the pieces in piles of 10 (#1-10, 11-20, etc).  The instructions were refreshingly clear and simple to follow, with both text and pictures to guide you.  It fit together really well; easy enough that our 4 year old cuold pitch in, and sturdy enough that the model will stay upright and put together for a long time.  The kids can't actively play with it, but it looks solid and sleek on the shelf - like our own little museum display. The only negative is thatthey apparently haven't come out with any other dinosaur species.   I think my kids would have loved to collect em all, if only there were more to collect.

I am now the proud owner of my own T.Rex! Following the very clear instructions given in the book, I now have a 3ft long skeleton model crouched on top of my piano and looking amazing! It is much admired. I think the whole design concept is very clever with the 71 individual pieces of the skeleton easily removed from within 11 boards which become a sturdy base and the intricacy and construction process for attaching the pieces is wonderful. No glue needed throughout! Each stage of the process is very clear with one following on after another to build up into the final splendid model. The book is full of information and wonderful pictures. This is a lovely product, educational, creative and fun! I am sure it will be enjoyed by many, adults as well as children and I do hope there will be more “Make Your Own” products to come.
