Overview

Makeup Your Mind deftly combines cult favorite cosmetics designer François Nars’ two remarkable talents—makeup and photography, both of which he uses in this collection to stunning effect—to show women how to enhance their natural beauty. Designed by renowned graphic artist Fabien Baron to be the ultimate makeup how-to book, Makeup Your Mind is a comprehensive compilation of Before and After photographs, each containing instructional acetate overlays, covering almost every face type, complexion, eye color, and facial feature found on the runway today. Makeup Your Mind is also a revolutionary instruction manual on makeup from one of the most respected and imitated cosmetics artists in fashion today: a makeup book designed and constructed as a durable paperback companion suitable for the vanity or for the car, sliding in and out of its attractive hardcover binder as needed, containing precise instructional guides on clear plastic overlays indicating exactly what goes where, allowing you to see the finished effect for perfect results.

Summarizing each chapter on "Eyes", "Lips", "Neutrals", "Shimmer", "Monochrome and Suntan", "Pastels", Color, and "Skincare" are François Nars’ trademarked guidelines on the technique of applying makeup for that dazzling NARS look.

Showcasing the famous NARS look are today’s top models, including Karen Elson, Maggie Rizer, Naomi Campbell, Devon Aoki, Trish Goff, Erin O’Connor, Sophie Dahl, May Anderson, Ling, Aurelie, Missy Rayder, Elsa, Caroline Ribero, Eva Herzagova, and many others.

Makeup Your Mind features these women and more in sixty-three stunning Before and After pictures. All of the models were shot sans makeup for the Before pictures, displaying their bare-naked faces replete with imperfections and idiosyncrasies. Their transformations in the After pictures span from natural and elegant to fun and outrageous. In superb four-color photographs and brilliant acetate instructional guides, Makeup Your Mind demonstrates how makeup can minimize flaws and maximize beauty potential for every woman.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
François Nars's Makeup Your Mind is an attractive book, but it isn't designed to grace a coffee table; it's designed to help you enhance your beauty. Thus, Nars's extreme close-up photographs seem almost unnerving until one realizes that they present the face only as up-close as we see our friends. The advice of this famed (and much imitated) cosmetics artist features a comparable precision. His guidelines about lips, eyes, color, and application are somehow both bold and sensible; radical without being reckless. A joyful distraction.

    LOVED it

You know, I had been looking for a real nice makeup book for a while. I'm not a professional, I'm just a teenage girl with a cosmetic obsession. I am also a teenage girl without a job, so I spend my money carefully. I had seen this book online, but it's reviews weren't that great. Being a fan of Nars, I decided to go to my Barnes and Noble and take a look at it myself. After flipping through the pages for five minutes, I was convinced this book was a must have. It has before and after pictures, and plastic sheets over the after pictures indicating where and how the makeup was applied. Nars explains everything from how the makeup should be applied, to how to clean the brushes when your done. Spiral bound, complete in a nifty plastic book slip, it's appealing to the eye. If you like Nars, GET THIS BOOK. If you like makeup, GET THIS BOOK. If you find yourself being held back by other's not so enthusiastic reviews, shoot over to B&N and take a look for yourself. Five stars!! If you have any questions, e-mail me.

Great pictures - can't read the print

This book has a great layout - over a hundred close-up shots of the face with a plastic sheet over each one indicating where the make-up up is placed on the face. The text is interesting as well - if you can read it without getting a headache. I have perfect vision but the print is such a light gray color that even if you are under a hundred watt lightbulb you begin to strain your eyes in order to read it. It's really annoying.

Helpful and more in depth-with actual products.

Makeup books are pretty common, and they always give you an idea of shades. Well, Francois tells you how to apply it, where to apply it, and the actual products/shades used. Plain and simple, but really good techniques and rich pigments. There are inspiring pictures, and before and after shots of each person. I like the clear sheets used over photos, which give you a better idea of how the looks were created.
