    Cimera, Robert E. (2002) Making ADHD a Gift: Teaching Superman How to Fly. Lanham, Maryland: Scarecrow Education. How you teach children about ADHD could set the tone for the rest of their lives. You¿ll have to paint an honest picture of the condition but also be very positive .¿ Talk to them about their favorite superhero¿. Bring up the fact that each superhero has different abilities¿. Then explain that people in real life are a lot like superheroes-everybody has different abilities.¿ The super abilities of kids with ADHD include having a lot of energy and being able to run around a lot without getting tired. They can also be very creative and intelligent. The purpose of school and IEPs is to get children with ADHD to control and utilize their super abilities for ¿The Good¿¿ You are teaching Superman how to fly (p. 97). This is the gift of this book. Robert E. Cimera is an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh who was diagnosed with ADHD-C as an adult. He views ADHD as a positive ability. Each chapter begins with a chapter outline; a case study, illustrating elements that will be addressed in the chapter; questions for consideration, for understanding the case study; and a discussion of underlying elements, concerns and strategies. The information is conveyed in a conversational style suitable for the layperson or student educator. In the first chapter he gives an overview of definitions and diagnoses of the four types of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder): ADHD-I (Inattentive), ADHD-HI (Hyperactive-Impulsive), ADHD-C (Combined), ADHD-NOS (Not Otherwise Specified). This information serves as a basis for understanding the case studies and discussions that follow. Each chapter gently carries the reader through a critical thinking process of application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. In the chapters that follow, the author covers the topics of: inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, social skills, educational programs, and strategies for ADHD children, adolescents and adults. Cimera also has the reader consider the possibility of other conditions or situations that could mistakenly be diagnosed as ADHD. The last chapter contains resources for individuals with ADHD and resources for their teachers and parents. It includes booklists, periodicals, videotapes, contact information for organizations and support groups and an annotated list of Internet sites. Most of the materials had imprints from the early nineties and late eighties. Only one of the websites mentioned was not currently accessible. The website annotations were quite pertinent to their content with the exception of the U.S. Department of Education site, which has been drastically revised since the publication of this book. Although there is a very detailed table of contents, there is no index. The addition of an index would have been useful. Overall, Cimera provides a positive, supportive and informative voice on the subject of ADHD. I found the examples of students and their goals (pp.130-131) especially illuminating in exploding my own preconceived attitudes toward ADHD. Special education students, classroom teachers, parents and adult individuals with ADHD could find valuable information and insights in this book. It provides an accessible introduction to the condition and provides the reader with the educational, environmental and behavioral accommodations and strategies that can help ADHD students, their parents, teachers and classmates create supportive scaffolding for success.     Making ADHD a Gift: Teaching Superman How to Fly

    The description of the book above is very accurate. The author does take a different approach when looking at ADHD. He has ADHD and says that it is a gift. The only thing that I would add is that this book is very well written and user friendly. It contains resources and strategies that anybody can use. It also presents ADHD in a way that the average parent and student could understand.

    Making ADHD a Gift: Teaching Superman How to Fly

    Did you know that there is several different kinds of ADHD? Like ADHD-HI and ADHD-NOS? I didn't until I read this book. How come I didn't know this before? I have read many other books on the topic and none of those talked about ADHD-NOS or ADHD-HI. They just mention ADHD and ADD and those are outdated terms! This book is witty, informative, fun to read, inspirational, useful.

    I just finished reading this book and I have to write something! It is extremely good! It is a must to have if you have kids like mine. It has ways of dealing with the problems of ADD that I would never have thought off. Plus it is really very positive and helpful! Great resource! Refreshing!

    Well-written, informative, and positive

    In his book, Making ADHD A Gift: Teaching Superman How To Fly, Dr. Cimera presents an extremely important notion that people with ADHD should "utilize their natural abilities and not try to repress them." The author is not again medication, but does warn of their risks. He spend the bulk of the pages discussing scores of very good and useful strategies that could help people with ADHD of all ages. His last chapter also outlines many resources, such as national organizations, websites, and other books. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is well-written, it addresses key issues related to working with individuals who have ADHD and is the first book that I have seen that views ADHD as a positive condition. The strategies alone will make this book well worth getting.

    Making ADHD a Gift: Teaching Superman How to Fly

    This book has changed my life!!!! It helped me better understand my son, Deven. Deven is in third grade. His teachers are getting so upset with him. They want to throw him out of school. He is always in trouble. They tell him to sit down but he can't. He vibrates around the room and gets into all kinds of trouble. He is a good kid, but just needs some help and understanding. I have been worried about him since he was young. This book has helped me identify strategies that can help him. I can't wait until I try them.

    Making ADHD a Gift: Teaching Superman How to Fly

    In his book, Teaching Superman How to Fly-Making ADHD A Gift, Robert Evert Cimera inspires and informs. His is the only book that I have read that takes the approach that ADHD is a good thing if it is handled appropriately. He then documents strategy after strategy that can help turn children with ADHD from misunderstood failures to students with superabilities. He argues that why complain that a child is hyperactive? Instead, make the child hyper-productive! This is a simple and apparent notion, but nobody else has ever raised it before. As with the title and last sentence in the book say it all, "ADHD is a gift. Utilize it! Don't repress it!"

    Excellent Resource Tool

    This book is an excellent resource tool for anyone desiring to learn more about ADHD. The author defines/explains ADHD and challenges the reader to consider whether ADHD is the appropriate diagnosis. This book includes information on drugs, behavior modification techniques and contains information on publications, websites, videos and other resource sources that are available to the reader.

    Making ADHD a Gift: Teaching Superman How to Fly

    I was given an advanced copy of Teaching Superman How To Fly and I must say that I am immensely impressed. The book is very well written and easy to read. It explains in everyday language exactly what ADHD is and how it affects people¿s lives. More importantly though, it talks about ADHD as being a good thing and how people with ADHD can employ their ¿negative¿ characteristics into ¿super abilities.¿ There are numerous helpful strategies for nearly every situation. The last chapter contains lists of additional resources including support groups, organizations, reading materials, and assessment devises. I would recommend this book to anybody with ADHD or has a child with ADHD. It is a MUST for teachers! -Diane Kraus
