Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Wheatley
"The Book of Kells, made in Ireland in the eighth century, is sometimes called the most beautiful book in the world" is one of the interesting pieces of trivia in this new addition in the "For Fun!" series. Rau's book provides a brief history of books with a book history timeline, and a description of the types of books, book bindings, and the various tools used to make books. The section about the parts of a book is very clearly labeled, making it easy for younger readers to understand. Six book projects are presented; a "Dream Journal," "Scroll Storybook," "Accordion Photo Album," "Piece of Pizza," "Nature Notepad," and bookmarks. Each book in the series includes a table of contents, additional resources, and glossary, although there is no correlation between the words in the glossary and the words in the text, such as bolded type. Clear, bright photographs accompany every section, and each project is accompanied by a photograph of the finished project, but diagrams or photos for each step would make this book more useable by younger readers. Due to the absence of the step-by-step photos or diagrams, this book's value is in the facts and trivia, rather than the project instructions. Reviewer: Barbara Wheatley
