In Reinventing Comics, McCloud took this to the next level, charting twelve different revolutions in how comics are generated, read, and perceived today. Now, in Making Comics, McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a character's facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.) Every medium should be lucky enough to have a taxonomist as brilliant as McCloud. The follow-up to his pioneering Understanding Comics (and its flawed sequel Reinventing Comics) isn't really about how to draw comics: it's about how to make drawings become a story and how cartooning choices communicate meaning to readers. ("There are no rules," he says, "and here they are.") McCloud's cartoon analogue, now a little gray at the temples, walks us through a series of dazzlingly clear, witty explanations (in comics form) of character design, storytelling, words and their physical manifestation on the page, body language and other ideas cartoonists have to grapple with, with illustrative examples drawn from the history of the medium. If parts of his chapter on "Tools, Techniques and Technology" don't look like they'll age well, most of the rest of the book will be timelessly useful to aspiring cartoonists. Scott McCloud has been writing, drawing, and examining comics since 1984. Winner of the Eisner and Harvey awards, his works have been translated into more than sixteen languages. I actually own the print version of this book, and when i saw that it had 4 stars & no reviews i had to rectify the situation, lol. For anyone thinking of buying this book- i challenge you to find a better book on the subject. The only book not by this author i'd recommend is alan moore's writing for comics, but it covers very little on visual aspects & the timing that takes place with visuals, but of course moore does write about such things in there, just not in such extensive detail, his book is key for other writing-based elements & i' highly recommend it for such. This is the authors 3rd book on comics, to the best of my knowledge, and although i don't own the other 2, i have looked through them & they're def worth the buy also, but creating comics is the most all-inclusive in my opinion. Mccloud goes into such extensive detail of not only what it means to create a graphic novel or comic book, but defines the reading process of intended viewers under new light for the person wanting to create as well. I've collected\read comics & graphic novels for many years, and mccloud still taught me, and brought to light, things i had never really thought about. The book is def worth the buy, especially if your looking to create stories- in any medium (not just comics) because the storytelling principles remain the same & are thoroughly thought out. The entire book also explains everything in the same style in which it is trying to teach you; graphicly. This may not seem like a big deal, but more often than not ive picked up other books on this subject & seen nothing but text & a few reference pictures illustrating key points. You wont find that here, as all points are illustrated with the author being the main character. Now that i feel i've fixed the 4 star, no review situation, i'll conclude with: if you're even thinking about getting this- do it! You'll be thankful you did & that someone actually took the time to write something so in-depth. I tried to slide my finger past the 5 stars to create a 6th, but it just wont do it, so 5 stars all the way!

One of the Best Books on this Subject! Definitely a must-have for any comics artists or writers looking to improve their work. Scott McCloud walks you through the various  elements of a successful comic book or graphic novel including storytelling through pictures, creating believable characters, using dialogue and captions, establishing the worlds of your stories, etc. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who wants to, or dreams of, making comics.

If you interested in making comics or graphic novels or simply curious about how to this is one of the best books you can get. Scott McCloud uses comics to teach comics, how perfect is that. I have book marked so many pages of this book that it is beginning to look like a tree. Highly recommended!!!

In his 1st two books, McCloud got deep into the history and then the theory of sequential storytelling. This volume delves much deeper into the practical applications of that theory. As always with McCloud, examples from the recent world of comics are cited and examined, to good effect. Very useful for anyone looking to make a comic, improve their own comics, or learn more about the way sequential storytelling functions(both in general and in specific). Good stuff, and filled with McClouds trademark sense of humor, as well as his keen insight into his craft.
