Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-- An example of how an actual book, The Dinosaur in the Park (Gareth Stevens, 1987), came about, from idea to publication. Readers see the original manuscript and its multiple revisions, and observe the illustrator sketch and develop the characters, try various media and techniques, and lay the illustrations out on the page. They then follow the book as it goes through all of the various production aspects, ending with a publication party. Every step is illustrated with examples of the work and/or clear color photographs of the people involved. Aliki's How a Book is Made (Crowell, 1986) is for a younger audience, while Althea emphasizes the printing process in Making a Book (Cambridge University Pr, 1983). Michael Kehoe's The Puzzle of Books (Carolrhoda, 1982) covers the path from submission of manuscript to finished book with black-and-white photos. Ali Mitgutsch goes From Picture to Picture Book (Carolrhoda, 1986) more simply with color sketches. Among others, the sound filmstrip How a Picture Book is Made (Weston Woods, 1976) traces Steven Kellogg's The Island of the Skog (Dial, 1973) from start to finish. --Sylvia S. Marantz, Wellington School, Columbus, OH
