Overview

Making of an Aviator is a first hand, lifelong account of the beginnings, progressive molding and ultimate fulfillment of an aviator's life. It ranges from boyhood model making to a Navy pilot's career in carrier aviation and two world record flight attempts after retirement. The many highs and lows of this active flyer's life were marked by a near fatal aircraft accident with a long year's recovery at the low point, while a year in command of one of the Navy's first line attack carriers marked the high.

A pilot's life necessarily involves those that are close. None are more intimately affected than a flyer's wife and family. While aviation is the focus of this story, the lives of these family members are a vital part of its fabric. It began as a high school romance, then marriage after graduation from the Naval Academy, and continues to the time of this writing.

For some, flying is a matter of casual interest. For some, a compulsion that's never quite fully satisfied. This is a story about the latter condition that draws an individual inexorably into the heavens to find the answers that lie in the far reaches of open sky.
