Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sherry Bohn, RDMS, RT (R).(Froedtert Hospital)
Description: This is a well-rounded, easily understood guide to vascular ultrasound that will be useful in any ultrasound lab. It offers a good review of the physical principles of ultrasound, anatomy and physiology, and pathology seen in the various vascular ultrasound examinations. This pocket-sized vinyl covered handbook will stand up to a lot of use. It's not basic enough for the beginner but very nice for those studying for ultrasound boards, the general sonographer, or radiology and vascular residents.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an easy to understand reference guide to those learning and working in the vascular lab. There are not many small pocket-sized vascular guides out there for those needing a quick reference. This book simplifies the complicated world of vascular ultrasound.
Audience: This hands-on guide is designed for, according to the author, vascular ultrasound students, general sonographers, sonologists, reporting radiologists, vascular physicians, and ultrasound educators. It might not be basic enough for the beginner, but it has lots of useful information even for the vascular physician starting a new vascular lab.
Features: The contents include anatomy and vascular physiology, clinical presentation, normal findings and criteria for disease, protocols for the various vascular ultrasound exams, and treatment. The diagrams are excellent as are the high-resolution ultrasound images. I wish there were more ultrasound images and diagrams showing technique of scanning and images needed to get for an exam. Throughout the book are helpful tips, hints, and warnings you may need to accomplish a good diagnostic exam. It is too bad accreditation was not touched upon, since it is so important for insurance reimbursement in the U.S.
Assessment: This is a nice, quick reference guide book to have in any ultrasound lab. Its pocket size adds to the convenience of having it in the department.
