Overview

It's summer break for the girls at Beachwood Academy and that means sun, surf, and sensational escapades at the Beachwood Country Club. Abby, a rising sophomore, is so excited to have gotten a last-minute gig as a lifeguard, especially because jobs are usually reserved for club members.

Abby desperately wants to win the annual lifeguarding competition, and with it a college scholarship. But when she arrives for her first day on the job, she finds herself face-to-face with some serious club member attitude. And there's an even bigger surprise waiting for her: the gorge senior boy she's been pining over ever since they met at a swimming competition earlier this year.

Can Abby break through the rules, regs, and mean girls to be the first-ever non-club member to win the summertime lifeguarding competition and maybe even the boy of her dreams?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carollyne Hutter
Abby Berkeley, a sophomore, comes from a blue-collar world (her father is a policeman), but she is spending the summer working in an elitist, white-collar world: the Beachwood Country Club. At the last minute, Abby has gotten a job as a lifeguard at the country club, a job that usually goes to club members. At the end of the summer, the country club has an annual lifeguarding competition, which comes with a juicy college scholarship. Abby, who is a serious swimmer, competitive, and loves to win, takes on the challenge of the lifeguarding competition because she could really use the scholarship, but standing in the way of her winning is Lexi, a mean girl with serious club member attitude. To complicate matters, Brody, a boy Abby has a serious crush on, wants to resume the sparks that flew at a swimming competition earlier this year, but the club has a rule that the staff can't get romantically involved or they lose their jobs. Brody offers to help Abby train for the lifeguard competition in a strictly platonic matter. Abby accepts Brody's offer, but is wary of him because there some mystery surrounding him. Can Abby take on the rich mean girls, win the competition, and be with Brody? The novel is a light, fun read, full of humor. Its strength is Abby and her love of swimming and beaches. The plot is somewhat obvious and Brody seems more like a romantic fantasy than a real teenage boy. The book is part of the "Pretty Tough" series.
