Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Ten-and-a-half-year-old Mallory McDonald and her best friend, Mary Ann, each enter their drawings for the Fashion Fran's Design Your Dream Outfit contest. The contest winner gets to go on Fashion Fran's television show in New York and model the winning outfit on the show. Mallory and Mary Ann make a pinky-promise that they will both go on the show if one of them wins. The promise between the two friends becomes a big problem. Fran selects Mallory's design; however, only the winner, Mallory, gets to be on the show. Mallory and Mary Ann's friendship is put to the test; the two pals find themselves not talking to each other during the trip. Will Mallory be able to come up with an idea to save her friendship with Mary Ann? Readers will discover Mallory's plan to get both of them on the program. This book is the nineteenth in the series. Fans of the "Mallory McDonald" series will probably enjoy this adventure in New York City. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
Kirkus Reviews
Mallory's friendship with Mary Ann is tested in this latest installment of the long-running series. The girls enter a fashion design contest, and Mallory wins both a trip for four to New York City and a chance to model her outfit on the TV program that sponsored the competition. She and Mary Ann pinky swear that they will find a way to share the glory. First Mallory's mother is persuaded to include Mary Ann and her mother in the foursome instead of Mallory's dad and brother. This accomplished, they enjoy the excitement of the big city, meeting Fashion Fran and preparing for the big TV event. Mallory seems unable to come up with a workable way for including Mary Ann, though, and a rift develops between them. Of course all is forgiven when Mallory's brilliant new idea allows her friend to have her own moment on the runway. Mallory, now 10 1/2, narrates her adventures in an easy, breezy manner. Kalis' black-and-white cartoon illustrations pleasantly complement the proceedings. Friedman aims her tale at an audience of middle graders, and this undemanding entry will please the series' fans. There is a disquieting acceptance and admiration of bratty behavior and manipulation in the girls' antics that will probably not be addressed or even noted by young readers. Slight and formulaic. (Fiction.7-10)

This is a super cute story about working hard for what you want

This is a super cute story about working hard for what you want and achieving your dreams. It is well written, entertaining, and will appeal to girls ages 8-12. The illustrations are cute and add a nice feel to the story.

My one complaint is that Mary Ann manipulates Mallory into breaking the rules by threatening to not be her friend anymore. I felt like Mallory was being bullied by her best friend. Other than that, I really liked the book.
