Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This is number thirteen in the "Mallory" series books; but that is not unlucky in this case as Mallory's experiences with green living make for a winning book for young readers interested in having a positive impact on their environment, whether at home or at school. Mallory gets the opportunity to be the class representative on the Fern Falls Elementary Environmental Committee, and she intends to use her position to make sure everyone becomes as focused on "going green" as she is. However, in her zeal to make change happen, she forgets to listen to anyone else's ideas, and takes offense when her friends do not agree that all her ideas are the best. The atmosphere at home is not much better, especially after Mallory gives her family "tickets" for what she considers to be sustainability infractions (brewing a pot of coffee, reading the newspaper). It is not until Mallory begins to realize that other people care about the environment, too, that she is able to balance her personal ideas about what people should do with other's good intentions. In the end, Mallory learns a lot about leadership and committee work even as she gets to enjoy all of the positive actions her school and friends are able to facilitate towards a greener community. This is a timely book that provides a fun look at green projects that elementary aged students can actually do. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
