Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Mallory is turning ten, so no ordinary birthday celebration is in order. Instead, she and her best friend, Mary Ann, join forces to convince Mallory's parents to let her host the "biggest, bestest, superest" sleepover ever. Mallory's parents agree, on the condition that she keep the gathering small and "promise the party will not get out of control." But party crashers arrive, the cupcake-decorating contest turns into a chaos-generating contest, the water-balloon fight becomes a water-balloon flood all over the living room floor, and the first girl to fall asleep finds herself the victim of an unkind prank; Mallory's "super sleepover" has turned into "a super mess." In this sixteenth installment of the popular series, Friedman once again shows her ability to capture late-elementary-school social dynamics with spot-on acuity; Kalis's boldly drawn illustrations enhance the text's clear kid appeal. It does seem unfair, however, for Mallory's parents to leave the party for an extended period of time, relinquishing supervisory authority to a teenage babysitter who is herself busy talking on her cell phone to her boyfriend, and then heap blame on poor Mallory for betraying their trust. Mallory's lengthy wallow in self-abasement hardly seems warranted. To the closing tips for a successful sleepover could be added a parallel list for parents, starting with: Stay on the premises and don't expect a just-turned-ten-year-old to become a grownup overnight. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.

Everyone who loves Mallory McDonald is going to thoroughly enjoy reading about her super disastrous super sleepover ...

Mallory McDonald, who shared the same the same last name as Mickey D's, had already turned ten, but hadn't done anything to celebrate. Mallory's best friend, Mary Ann, was an "expert on knowing how to get parents to say yes" and surely between the two of them they would be able to come up with a fantabulous idea for her party. Of course when they were discussing "invites vs. evites" in Mr. Knight's math class he wasn't all that happy. That was just an inking of the problems they were going to have with the party they decided on . . . "Mallory's Super Sleepover." A regular sleepover just wouldn't do. It had to be a Super one! The last thing on the agenda was to get Mallory's parents to agree to the party and start planning.

Naturally Mallory's brother, Max, was N.I., "Not Invited." Neither were Arielle and Danielle, but little did Mallory know they had different plans. Mallory and Mary Ann, who listed every girl they ever knew (except for the aforementioned duo), were having trouble narrowing down the candidates for the super sleepover invite. Mallory told Mary Ann that "my-parents-said-I-have-to-keep-this-party-small." Did "small" mean two or three or eight? The two best friends had to plan the activities. They would decorate cupcakes, have party favors, marshmallows and a movie, a water balloon fight, snacks, and fun, fun, fun. Mallory had already turned ten, but this would be the best "un-birthday" ever.

Mallory and Mary Ann were beside themselves with excitement when everyone started to arrive at Mallory's Super Sleepover. No doubt Fern Falls Elementary would be hearing about the best ever party at 17 Wish Pond Road. Even Grandma had called to wish her little "Honey Bee" a happy tenth. The excitement began when Mallory, Mary Ann, Pamela, April, Emma, Zoe, AND the party crashers Danielle and Arielle began to decorate their cupcakes. It wasn't long before Mallory's "small" birthday celebration began to get out of hand when Crystal, her favorite babysitter, stepped outside to answer a call. All of a sudden Danielle began to scream, "Look outside!" Looked like there was t-r-o-u-b-l-e on the horizon. "MALLORY!" Would Mallory ever get out of the dog house for this one? Would Mary Ann ever speak to her again? Waaaaaah!

Everyone who loves Mallory McDonald is going to thoroughly enjoy reading about her super disastrous super sleepover. Mallory, who is aging right along with her "fans," will chuckle when they get a load of how she can get into t-r-o-u-b-l-e without even trying. No doubt about it, I'm a Mallory fan and am quite familiar with her charming personality. I love it when she says things like, "I think if I blew my nose right now, the only thing that would come out would be happiness." If you haven't been fortunate enough to meet Mallory's acquaintance, you'll soon learn that statements like that are sooooo "Mallory." If you check out Mallory's website you'll be able to meet the characters, check out some fun activities, learn about the other books in this series, and if you are a teacher you can check out some lesson plans and download a few activities.
