Human children don't have a monopoly on wanting their mothers to stay. As Wilson (Bear Snores On) points out, "All the little birdies cry/ when Mama says she has to fly." But the examples reassure readers that mamas leave for good reasons, and it's never forever. Mama Bird needs to fetch worms, Mama Dog "goes to see her boy" and human Mama needs to run an errand or go to work. Whether babies wait in a nest, a barn or a suburban house, "Mama always comes home." Unfortunately, while the title promise (which also serves as the rhyming text's refrain) is unabashedly heart-tugging, the book itself is not. Dyer's (Lullaby Moons and a Silver Spoon) watercolors resemble the flat yet overworked quality of greeting card illustrations; she mostly regards her subjects from the same perspective and distance, and seems to favor physical detail over emotional depth. Wilson's text feels uncharacteristically blunted and unsupported, and an idea that should have been a home run strikes out within the first few pages. Ages 3-6. (Mar.) PreS-A gentle and reassuring picture book. Children will be drawn right in from the title page, on which a mother holds and kisses her pajama-clad child. The consistently tender illustrations follow the text's well-crafted rhymes as different animal mothers leave their offspring for a brief period and then return. Mama Bird (in a flowered headscarf) feeds her babies, then tucks them beneath a quilt in their nest before digging up more worms; Mama Cat leaves her kittens in the barn to have a sip of cream in the house; Mama Dog runs out to play with her boy. Each example ends with the refrain: "Mama always comes home." At the end of the story, the human mother explains to her little one, "I want to stay,/but while I'm gone have fun and play,/and soon, before you know,/time will fly right by, and then/I'll be coming home again." Presented with a delicate and loving touch, this book embodies the power of thoughtful text supported by insightful pictures. A rather ho-hum production on a familiar theme. Wilson chooses to rhyme her reassuring but pedestrian message, first in a series of animal portraits and then closing with a child whose mom leaves the moppet in dad's charge. The animals are slightly anthropomorphized: Mama bird wears a flowered kerchief and there's a quilt on the nest; mama cat sports a polka-dot headscarf, although the polar bears and dolphins do not. Dyer's colors are as bright and clear as early summer, but the refrain, "Mama always comes home," gets tiresome. "Mamas everywhere! They leave their little ones, but then . . . / They hurry right back home again." Yes, we get it, but couldn't you say it a bit more prettily? (Picture book. 3-7)
