Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A bilingual girl and her Mamá spend a day together in this sensitive story about autonomy and togetherness, a companion to Papá and Me. The spirited speaker insists on doing just about everything by herself ("Sola, sola," she tells Mamá). But Mamá is always close by as they make cookies, purchase paint, and then joyfully create a garden mural on the walls of their home. In bright oranges, yellows, and greens, Gutierrez's dynamic collages have a powerful sense of movement and incorporate batik, flora, and abstract designs, while auralike outlines surrounding the pair vibrate with energy and accentuate the vitality of their bond. Ages 4–8. (Mar.)

K-Gr 1—In this companion to Papá and Me (HarperCollins, 2007), a girl spends the day with her mother making cookies, working in the garden, going to el mercado, and painting a room in the house. The bilingual child wants to do everything "sola, sola," by herself. Mamá gives her the freedom to explore and learn while still being available to help as needed. The text is mostly in English with a few Spanish words that are easily figured out through the responses. The faces in the watercolor illustrations are realistic, with backgrounds filled with flowers and designs. Movement is provided through outlines that flow and twirl around on the pages. An easy-to-read text, a loving message, and attractive illustrations make this book an excellent choice for Mother's Day.—Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX

PreS-Gr 3—Dorros's book is an ode to a relationship between a mother and her daughter, told in English with a smattering of Spanish. The child wants to do things by herself but she also recognizes the need for help from her mother. Gutierrez's stylized illustrations capture both the contemporary aspect of the story, while incorporating Latino design traditions.
