    Heartbreaking read

Impossible to read without shedding tears or feeling for the main character! How can any mother treat her own flesh and blood so horribly based on their skin color and texture of their hair? Yet there are people out there who do this, so I found the book very believable and wonder if this is somewhat the author's own upbringing or someone she knew. Was very satisfied with the ending. Won't spoil it for the reader but it made me glad I finished the book.

A horrible way to treat a child!

This was my first read by this author and it wont be my last. The story was good and sad! It was sad to see how a mother could dislike/hate her child so much because of her skin color. I would recommend this book!

    more from this reviewer

I really enjoyed this book. This was my first time reading fro

I really enjoyed this book. This was my first time reading from this author, but i really enjoyed it. This author took you on such a journey from the time Dana was a baby it was great to get the first hand view of the things she was seeing and experiencing, which made the book more real. The book takes us from day one to the child is a teenager and you get to read and experience the things she does.

The mother in this book I could not STAND!! who treats their child like that and some of the things she did to her was like wow this woman should not have been allowed to have children she was just pure evil.

Though the book had a lot of rough moments it didnt have a good moral behind it... letting you know just because someone tries to stand in your way and stop you from doing great things doesnt mean that you have to fall into that you determine your own destiny!!

I really enjoyed this book and recommend others read it!

    Incredible emotional journey

In the first few chaps, I was extremely bored disgusted by the perspective I was forced to read in. Decided to finish the book just for the sake of finishing....ending up being a great read. This is such an emotion roller coaster. I found myself rooting for Dana like a cheerleader. What a great depiction of struggle and triump!
