Overview

Mama Sarah Obama: My Home Cooking Recipes is not only a recipe book: It describes the eating habits of Sarah Obama's family. It gives glimpses of the kitchen and culture of East Africa. Sarah's tales portray on one hand - her daily effort to put food on her family's table, on the other - family gatherings, including the ones with her famous grandson President Barack Obama, around her home cooking and freshly served meals.

Mama Sarah Obama: My Home Cooking Recipes was created by international interviewer and author Daphne Barak as well as members of the Obama family while writing "Mama Sarah Obama: Our Dreams & Roots". The family members who stayed at Barak's home in the U.S., cooked Sarah Obama's favorite dishes - while assisting Barak to complete Sarah's autobiography. Many of them played a role in the family history including the reunion and ongoing encounters with President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and later - his daughters. Prominent doctor Mark Hyman found Sarah Obama's cooking and eating habits as "healthy" to both your body and mind. Dietitian Marilyn Pabon joined this conclusion happily, after adding nutrition value to each dish. And friends of Barak who tasted each one of the dishes, cooked by the Obamas, gave it a unanimous "High 5".

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, author of "The Blood Sugar Solution", who wrote the introduction to "Mama Sarah Obama: Home Cooking Recipes", the recipes included here are very healthy. I appreciated the nutritional scores assigned by dietitian, Marilyn Pabon, who gives us the calories, fat, fiber and carbs for each recipe. Daphne Barak has compiled a fun little cookbook about Barack Obama's grandmother, Mama Sarah Obama's home cooking. But it's also very timely as it complements Michelle Obama's campaign to promote healthy eating and combat obesity. What ever happened to healthy home cooking anyway??

Looking at the Kenyan recipes "ugali" or "omena", I thought it might have me spending a long time in the kitchen. But no! In less than an hour, I managed to cook both recipes and try them out on my family. They loved them. This little book by Daphne Barak is more than a cookbook. It gives you some insight into the interesting culture of Mama Sarah Obama from Kenya, the grandma of Barack Obama, President of the US. Mama Sarah doesn't own a refrigerator so everything she cooks is fresh, mostly from her vegetable garden, her chicken coop and nearby Lake Victoria. It gave me a more complete picture of the President's background. And maybe this is what inspired Michelle Obama to start the White House vegetable garden!
