Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bear cub Sammy and his mother observe nature’s changes in this sweetly reassuring companion to Mama, How Long Will You Love Me? and Mama, Will You Hold My Hand? A caterpillar will soon become a butterfly, Mama explains, and “a spotty egg hatches into a baby bird.” Pignataro paints in the palest of palettes, tracing the two bears and various objects in wispy pencil lines. Boarding a small ship, Sammy imaginatively travels beyond the security of the meadow home; upon his return, the conversation inevitably turns to whether Sammy will change: “ ‘You will become big and strong,’ whispered Mama. ‘But you will be my little bear forever.’ ” Ages 3–5. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
The third title in Pignataro’s books about growing up features the same watercolor illustrations and soothing palette as the other two titles. This time, the lesson is about changes. A cocoon changes into a butterfly and a spotted egg hatches into a baby bird. Baby bear wonders why there are so many changes all the time and his mother patiently explains that while many things change, some important things never do. For the pre-school set, this makes a great little bedtime or naptime read-aloud. The text is simple and comforting and the illustrations are charming. The title is not a line that appears at all in the text, but is the underlying sentiment in the story. While this is probably not a necessary purchase for a classroom library, parents and grandparents might want to make it part of their home libraries for those times when their own little bears do not want to take a nap because they are worried that something will happen while they are asleep and they will miss it. Reviewer: Ellen Welty; Ages 3 to 5.
