Mama's Hand

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David McGee
Mother songs have been a staple of country music since the 1920s, and the bluegrass collection Mama's Hand illustrates how the depth of feeling for the family matriarch bridges generations and remains a source of inspiration -- Rhonda Vincent says as much in the plaintive, album-opening "Medals for Mother." With Dan Tyminski on lead vocal, Alison Krauss & Union Station's forceful reading of "Momma Cried," Bob Lucas's contemporary tale of a mother's grief over a lost child, is as gripping as the Blue Sky Boys' rendition of the1922 lament "If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again." The stature of the songwriters here only elevates the results: Gospel titan Thomas A. Dorsey's "Shake My Mother's Hand for Me" gets a stark, acoustic treatment by the wonderful Whitstein Brothers; Jimmie Rodgers's "Mother, the Queen of My Heart" is rendered in an austere trio setting by Bashful Brother Oswald and Charlie Collins; and Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard offer an evocative, beautifully harmonized rendition of J. B. Coates's "The Sweetest Gift, a Mother's Smile." The album also features one of the first recordings made by Doc Watson and his wife Rose Lee, "I Heard My Mother Weeping," written by Hank Williams's wife Audrey. These texts, classic and contemporary, explore everlasting familial bonds with warmth and artistry.
