Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The book starts off by noting that mammals are the most popular pets and also that there are 5,000 different kinds of mammals in the world. But what is a mammal? The series of true or false statements begin to impart information about the characteristics of mammals. Readers learn that they do not all live on land; however they do all have similar skeletons which include a main backbone. Most mammals give live birth and in most cases these babies cannot take care of themselves. Mammals breathe air; have hair and their bodies remain about the same temperature whether it is hot or cold outside. Most mammals live in groups and they can eat just plants (herbivores) or meat (carnivores) or both (omnivores). Some are picky eaters and will only eat one type of food such as pandas which live on bamboo and koalas which eat eucalyptus leaves. These and many more interesting facts will help readers learn what a mammal is and they may be surprised to learn that humans are mammals. The full color photographs are excellent and do their job in supporting the text. There is a two page index. Part of the "True or False" series. This early reader would also work very well for older children not reading on grade level or ESOL students. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
