Meet the Author

Ben Collins was born in Bristol before moving to California, where he competed as a junior Olympic standard swimmer. When a career as a fighter pilot was cut short by a visit to the optician, Ben switched to cars. He won races in every category from Formula Three to Le Mans Sportscars and GT, and captured the European ASCAR title. When a lack of funding curtailed his racing career, Ben joined the Army Reserves. He also worked as a Hollywood stuntman. In 2003 he became the anonymous fourth presenter, known as The Stig, of Top Gear, coaching celebrities, organising car chases and testing hundreds of priceless cars. Eight years and 13 series on, his alter ego is recognised by millions around the world. Ben loves in the West country with his wife Georgie and 3 children.

Here is a book that is a must read for any fan of the stig It is a well written, intelligent and funny memoir of some of the hightlights of his life I do think that the show should have gave him more credit and maybe helped him out with his racing.

A great review of his life covering not only Top Gear, but his family, LeMans, sports car racing, and military training. Ben seems to be a modest, humble person with kind words for nearly everyone.

It was definitely interesting to read how the Top Gear guys were with each other behind the scenes also how Ben would have to hide his identity so meticulously. Bottom line, if you like the show you'll enjoy the book. Good Luck Ben.

This is a well-written story about Ben Collins' life. Although he is best known as The Stig from Top Gear, much of this book concerns Collins' life in the military and his trials and tribulations as a race car driver. I bought the book because I am a big Top Gear fan and I found the book very enjoyable. While Top Gear is discussed at length in the book, the book is not a tell-all or replete with behind-the-scenes information. It does contain many interesting details about Top Gear, but when you buy this book, keep in mind that it is really about Collins more so than Top Gear. It's still a great read.

Clarkson suggested that we not buy this book in protest of Sacked Stig breaking silence. I should have taken his advice, it's not great prose. It's got a lot of info about his military service and only minor items that you don't know if you watched Top Gear religiously and have done some reading about it on the TG website and such. Clarkson and Hammond's books about TG are much more entertaining.
