Edited by the executive director of the Maurice and Jane Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice in Detroit, this anthology of articles by physicians, lawyers, activists, and scholars addresses the effects of gender stereotypes on women's healthcare. Though the book aims to expand the definition of "women's health" beyond reproductive issues, this is not followed through very well. Three chapters stand out: one explores the concept of gender as a social rather than a biological construct; another studies the way gender bias shapes media coverage of health-related studies; yet another looks at the health ramifications of tort reform. The chapters dealing with specific subpopulationse.g., disabled women, immigrants, prisoners, and women with AIDSare weaker, and the book lacks chapters on age and sexual orientation. Despite its focus on activism, the book is well researched and scholarly in tone.
