It is the summer of 1943 in Canada, in the midst of World War II, and friends Scott and Adam have been lucky enough to land a summer job onboard the Rapids Prince as deckhands. Their summer experience will take them down the rapids of the St. Laurence River and to the streets of Old Montreal, then back again as the ship delivers passengers through the rough waters. When Adam is chosen to replace one of the kitchen workers and Scott remains a deckhand, they agree to watch out for each other. How could Scott predict that a piece of pie would bring adventure that would envelop him, Adam and their friends in an act of terrorism? Based on a true historical event, the story unfolds when Adam's fascination with a Packard Touring Car that is parked at the ship's dock causes him to get a little too close to two gentlemen talking as they wait to board the ship. The two men are German operatives with a plan to plant a bomb on the ship that will create a blockage along the river way, thus stopping the Allied forces from being able to use the waterway. In their efforts to learn more about the plot, Scott and Adam become captives of the German spies and Scott is released only to provide cover for their plan. When the choice of a hideout provides Scott with an opportunity to free Adam and make it back to the ship for help, the only concern remaining is if there is a bomb on the ship and where it might be. This story will capture the imagination of male readers with intrigue, danger, mystery and friendship. This would be a good classroom library edition for the history/social studies curriculum. In a story set during World War II and based on a true event, four teens find themselves caught up in a dangerous adventure involving Nazi spies. Sixteen-year-old Scott and his friend Adam have taken summer jobs aboard the Rapids Prince, a tourist boat that navigates the rapids on the St. Lawrence River. Setting events in motion, Scott overhears a suspicious conversation, and a man disappears overboard. Adam is kidnapped and taken into hiding, where he befriends Colette, the girl who brings him his meals. She warns Adam that she has overheard his captors speak of explosives, and it becomes increasingly clear that they work for Hitler. Meanwhile, Scott and his girlfriend, Lindsay, do some spy work of their own trying to rescue Adam. The action is propelled forward in chapters that alternate point of view. As the plot unfolds, the teens learn that the lines between good and bad, cowardice and courage are blurry. The action waxes and sometimes flags, but the novel breathes life into important events while exploring the complexities of human nature, especially in times of extreme duress. Gr 4–6—Scott and Adam are spending the summer of 1942 working on the Rapids Prince, a steamboat that travels through the Long Sault Rapids of the Saint Lawrence River. Trouble starts on their very first voyage when Scott sneaks off to take a look at one of the passenger's Packard 12 automobile and overhears a conversation between German spies. They try to grab him but Adam gets in the way, so they kidnap him in order to keep Scott quiet. While in captivity, Adam meets Collette, a French-Canadian girl who decides to help him escape. At the same time, Scott begins searching for Adam. He gets a lead when his friend and crush, Lindsay, who works at the hotel where the spies meet, finds a clue from Adam. Scott begins some spying of his own in order to find Adam and figure out how to stop the Germans. The story line moves quickly, which does not leave room for much character development. Meet the Author

Curtis Parkinson grew up in Kingston, Ontario. After working as a chemical engineer for many years he moved to the Caribbean to live on a sailboat and write. Storm Blast, his first novel, is set in the Caribbean. His knowledge about sailing and the Great Lakes has been the basis for several of his highly acclaimed novels for young adults.

    Great for boys

    When the package first got here, my 11-year-old son stole it out of my hands, saying, "Finally, a book for me!" He disappeared for half a day, and when he emerged he made me order Curtis Parkinson's older books so he could read those as well. I also enjoyed this young adult book - it was fast-paced, full of dilemma, mystery, and a wee bit of romance - just right for a boy of a certain age. The combination of ships, Nazis, kidnapping, and a diabolical plan were spot on. Is he an author I would read more? No. But for my boys, he is the kind of writer that I will direct them toward.
