I suppose I wanted to read this book because it was a little "different". I was curious to read a vintage supernatural thriller. Now, I usually don't go in for horror or ghost stories. And I probably won't in the future. But I thought it might be fun when I ordered this through InterLibrary Loan. When I went to pick it up from the library, I was struck by how small and short it was. This is not a chapter book. Rather, it felt (probably because it was) a serial published in a turn-of-the-century magazine. Definitely not epic classic literature. There's a reason why this book was forgotten about. There really didn't seem to be much of a point to the story. It's just a good old-fashioned sea yarn. I didn't hate it, but there wasn't anything to make me like it, really. Just a light read. This might have sent a chill down the spine of the weaker sex in corsets in 1903, but it will barely accomplish a goosebump in today's culture used to Lord of the Rings movies. Was this review helpful?
