About the Author

Dr. Jeffrey P Okeson has dedicated his career to educating students, residents and clinicians in the areas of occlusion, temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. He has been a full-time faculty member at the University of Kentucky for 45 years. He is recognized worldwide as an authority in the field of TMD and orofacial pain, lecturing in every state in the USA and 59 different foreign countries.

Description: The author presents a logical approach to occlusion and mastication and how it relates to temporomandibular joint disorders in this book. It builds an understanding of anatomy, physiology, functional disturbances, and treatment of these disorders with useful algorithms, and includes more recent therapeutic interventions such as botox.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a logical and practical approach to the study of occlusion and masticatory function.
Audience: The book is aimed at dental students, residents, and practitioners with an interest in temporomandibular joint disorders.
Features: After laying a foundation for understanding, the book features very useful algorithms for diagnosis and treatment. However, the book fails mention the percentage of patients who can be successfully managed using the outlined approaches or the surgical therapy for the joints.
Assessment: This is a constantly changing field with an abundance of literature. The first edition referenced 450 articles while this edition is supported by 2,200 references. This is an indication of how much growth has taken place in the field and why this edition is a worthy update.

The author is internationally renowned for his knowledge and expertise in the fields of occlusion and TMD, and this is portrayed throughout the maturity and depth of the present textbook.

Complementing the text are very clear and useful black and white graphics and illustrations, many of which are original to the illustrator, Allison Lucas Wright, while others are photographs of actual patient cases from the author as well as from others to whom the author provides credit. Still other illustrations and graphics are reflective of various imaging modalities of the temporomandibular joint and its associated structures."
