Description: This is a basic nursing management text. The prior editions were published in 1991 and 1995.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide beginning nurses management skills so they can more effectively function in complex healthcare environments. There is no question that the stated purpose is met.
Audience: The stated audience is the beginning registered nurse, which is appropriate since the book contains basic information on many management topics. Any new RN could benefit from the information provided. The authors and text reviewers all have positions in academia. There is no indication that management/nursing administration is a specialty of any authors or reviewers.
Features: Topics such as leadership, delegation, delivery methods, time management, patient advocacy, change, conflict, and personnel performance issues are covered in appropriate detail. Each of the 17 chapters has objectives, a list of key terms, a description of key concepts, and critical thinking exercises. Many examples are included to illustrate content. Attractive and visually easy to read tables, figures, and charts enhance main points. Scattered throughout the text are excellent sections on how the content is applicable to the staff nurse level in any organization. These are distinct advantages to this text. However, some important concepts, such as managing resources and quality care are covered superficially, and some topics (such as job satisfaction) seem to be absent from the text. The chapter on information systems is extremely basic and the chapters on nursing research and managing a career seem more appropriate for other courses. Little nursing management research is included.
Assessment: This is a useful text. It contains basic leadership/management information needed by a staff nurse and compares favorably to similar texts.
