Overview

In clear language and using helpful illustrations, this comprehensive guide deals with both the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and the most effective, clinically tested ways to help patients manage the disease. All symptoms are discussed, from spasticity, tremor, and fatigue to bladder, bowel, and sexual difficulties. In addition, newer ways to manage complex and routine symptoms are explored. The book, now in its fifth edition, covers the most recent advances in drug therapies and other treatments, including new discoveries, recently developed medications, and medical breakthroughs. Also included are an overview of the disease, a glossary of common medical terms, a list of helpful exercises, and information on transfer and mobility resources. Organized to reflect the three areas of MS management — management of the disease, management of its symptoms, and management of lifestyle and general wellness issues — the book is an invaluable reference for MS patients, families, and providers.

"Recommend[ed] not only for patients but also for doctors and other health professionals that, although not specialised in MS, come in contact with these patients."— Scandinavian Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine

"...provides a roadmap for patients and professionals to symptomatic relief of MS symptoms... Schapiro doesn't merely provide medical or surgical solutions - he offers lifestyle strategies as well."— PA Today

"A very helpful book for those who treat multiple sclerosis patients...The book is recommended for neurologists, general physicians, physiotherapists and postgraduate students." — World Neurology

"Ably written by Dr. Randall T. Schapiro...and now in a newly updated and expanded fourth edition, Managing The Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis is a practical, informative, and medically sound instructional guide to dealing with the day-to-day difficulties induced by MS...especially commended as being a 'reader accessible' resource written especially for those with MS and their medical/familial caretakers"— The Bookwatch

"This book is written for people with multiple sclerosis, but the comprehensive contents would be of use to undergraduate students or junior practitioners unfamiliar with the area. As such, it would be a useful resource for any multiple sclerosis group or treatment centre and a helpful addition to a departmental library." —Physiotherapy

Reviewer: Ender A Akan, B.S., M.D.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a resource guide for patients and their families to help them understand the various clinical sequelae of multiple sclerosis (MS) and the various management issues.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a resource for patients and their families on the management of daily issues associated with multiple sclerosis. The book is worthwhile because multiple sclerosis is a complicated disease with many treatment issues that patients and their caretakers need to understand.
Audience: The book is written for patients and their families. It may also benefit students in the various fields of medicine.
Features: The book covers management and treatment of various problems a patient with MS may encounter. It takes a problem by problem approach and gives tips the patient may use at home. The systemic approach to MS is clear and understandable. It is a good reference for patients who may need to quickly look up and answer a treatment question. The contents also allow the reader to gain independence and control of their disease. The illustrations are not appealing to the eye and could use more completion.
Assessment: This is a high quality publication and a necessary resource for patients and their caretakers to have on hand. It supplements well visits to the physicians any may actually help physicians in the education of patients about the disease.
