Children's Literature - Sue Poduska
This volume of the "Animals Animals" series is a wonderful introduction to a relatively unknown sea creature. Speculation continues that one source for mermaid stories came from distant sightings of manatees. In fact, the scientific order for manatees is Sirenia, for the sirens. Species of manatees range from Africa to South America to the Caribbean. They are very well adapted due to their gentle herbivore diet and continous search for the warm waters they need. Their relationship with humans, however, has been disastrous. They have been hunted for their hide and blubber and often face injury from motor boats. They were one of the first animals to be protected under the Endangered Species Act. Pollution is also a major concern. With this book, the reader should get a feel for this gentle giant and why humans need to help them survive. Resources include numerous colorful photographs, a good table of contents, useful glossary, great "Find out more" list, and complete index. Reviewer: Sue Poduska
