Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Manga means comics in Japanese. Shoujo is a style of manga that is very popular. It is identifiable because the characters have big eyes. Shoujo stories are full of adventure as well as friendship, loyalty and teamwork. They appeal to both boys and girls. Step-by-step illustrations demonstrate how each of the characters is drawn. The first lesson shows how to draw girls and boys heads. Most of the features are representational except the eyes. They are as much as four times larger than normal human eyes. Spiky hair and thick eyebrows are a few of the common traits of shoujo boys. The leading men of shoujo are called bishies, or handsome men. Unlike the boys and girls who have rounded faces, the bishies have long thin features. Their eyes are not as exaggerated as the boys and girls, and all of the bishie bodies are long and thin. Many pages are devoted to instructions for drawing the figures. Once the figures are mastered, the characters are drawn in different scenarios; a girl is seated at a desk in school and skateboarding. Planetary commanders, magical boy, gallant knight, goddess and fairies complete the cast of characters for shoujo.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-Two books that will appeal to fans of imported cartoons and collectible card games like Pok mon and Yu-Gi-Oh! The design of both is standard fare for how-to-draw books-each page takes a character, then shows a step-by-step rendering starting with simple shapes and adding more detailed lines until the final figure is realized. Manga Shoujo is full of clean, bold colors and lines, but the presentation is somewhat rote. The character descriptions are fairly generic and seem to show only a superficial knowledge of the culture. Monsters! is more engaging, with many variations on the now-ubiquitous "cute monster" character. It is also one of the few manga drawing titles that is easily accessible to very young children; its nearly textless layout is perfect for budding artists. Hart's books are designed for young, casual fans who will appreciate the simplicity of the drawing style and will use these titles as an easy introduction to this art.-Steev Baker, Kewaskum Public Library, WI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    disappointing

Not up to the quality and detail I have come to expect from Christopher Hart. I felt it was incomplete as though I only purchased part of a book and important pages we're missing.
