Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

The amount of Japanese manga available in English has become truly staggering, and this excellent comprehensive encyclopedia fills a major need. It contains entries for over 1000 series and stand-alone manga volumes translated into English, including suspended and out-of-print publications, bilingual manga published in Japan, and American periodical comics series never collected in book form. (Manga-influenced works from the United States, Korea, and elsewhere are not featured.) Each entry encompasses basic citation information, an age rating, a one-paragraph review, and a quality ranking from zero to four stars. Many reviews are by former Viz editor Thompson; two dozen other reviewers also contribute. Yaoi and explicit adult manga are segregated into separate sections after the main alphabetical listings. Thirty-eight thematic entries cover such genres and topics as science fiction, mystery, magical girls, dojinshi, and transgender stories, often noting untranslated classics but including extensive lists of English examples. A glossary, bibliography, artist index, and good introductory material round out the volume. An extensive sample reveals only a few minor instances of incomplete information. Any fan will disagree with some of the star rankings, but this volume-highly useful for reference, readers' advisory, and collection development-is strongly recommended for all libraries.
—S.R.

A Must-Have Resource for any Bookseller, Librarian or Comic Shop

As a manga reader for nearly twenty years, I pride myself on an extensive knowledge of the wide range of manga available in the United States. This book shames me. Titles I had never heard of, both old and new, are covered in this book along with every other title in-between. The reviews are concise, consistent and even comedic. Additionally, in-depth explanations of manga terms and the different types of manga are sprinkled throughout the book and provide a wealth of information for the curious. As indispensible as a great movie guide (but not yet made irrelevant by internet-based guides), Manga: The Complete Guide is a must have for anyone in a reference position, or anyone who enjoys manga and wants to know what other titles they're missing.

If you ever wanted to know about any manga ever written in Japan

If you ever wanted to know about any manga ever written in Japan and/or
translated and published in the US this book is an absolute must-have.
Will give you good choices for what manga you may want to read. Gives
age appropriate ratings. Even gives you explanations on certain topics
(like Shoujo, Yuri, etc.) with lists of manga that reflects each one.
Excellent book to have on your Manga bookshelf.

    3.5 of 5
This is the best guide I have yet found to manga published in the United States, but it still lacks important features.
    1) This book is sorted alphabetically by title, which is good, but it really should have some sort of tab system along the side to easily and quickly go to the letter you are searching for. (darkened edges or page indentations like a dictionary would be great) I did end up putting sticky notes on the side of mine but because of that I can no longer put it in my shelf completely because I fear that they will get crushed.
    2) A hard cover edition is desperately needed for this book. I look through this book very often and it has become worn. I treat my books with the utmost care and even so the edges and corners of this one have started to wear. Having a hard cover version would be very useful for libraries as well.
    3) An update and revised edition would be very useful considering that this book was published half a decade ago. Many new manga series are being created and translated each year and I find that almost half of the ones I look up are not in this book. For the ones that are listed and were not completed at the time of publication, it would be nice if the information would be updated to more accurately display information on many of the series. (number of volumes, years series was published, etc.) Maybe every five years a new version could be published that covers more recently translated works.
