"Don't try to be different." That's what Manolito's mother tells him. But Manolito can't help it - he doesn't have to try. He was named for his father's truck, after all! He doesn't even mind being called Four-Eyes, since all the cool kids have nicknames...

Whether he's fighting over the One-and-Only Susana with his best friend, Big Ears; trying not to fight with Ozzy the Bully; telling his entire life story to the school psychologist; sharing a room with his "whole lotta cool" grandpa; or discovering the true meaning of World Peace - ten-year-old Manolito is a real original.

As he would say, in the worldwide world, there's nobody like him! And for the first time, this best-selling phenomenon from Spain is available in English.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
AGERANGE: Ages 10 up.

Manolito has the normal dramas that most preteens face. He and his best friend fight over The One-and-Only Susana. He struggles to prove to his teacher Miss Asunción that he is not a delinquent, although his imagination and impulsivity frequently challenge his attempts. He is frequently lectured by his mother for anything and everything. He does give her a reason to lecture on occasion, like when he was caught cheating on a test, when he dropped snack cakes from the balcony, and many more misadventures. When Ozzy, the biggest bully in school, hits him and breaks his glasses, his father and grandfather help him. Their assistance leads to his father's glasses getting broken, but Ozzy and Manolito do spend some time as best friends. Manolito is followed and copied by his baby brother, The Bozo. Manolito survives a costume contest, his grandfather's birthday, and his first date. This is a wonderfully fun read that will appeal to all audiences. It is appropriate for either a personal purchase or a library purchase. It is a good book when discussing bullying with younger children. Reviewer: Jennifer Mitchell

School Library Journal

Gr 4-6- This is a translation of Manolito Gafotas , a contemporary novel for children in Spain that has also inspired feature films and television shows. All of the neighbors in the boy's Madrid suburb know the 10-year-old as Manolito Four-Eyes because he wears glasses with thick lenses. The story focuses on his everyday life with some of his favorite pals, such as "Big Ears" Lopez and his heartthrob, the "One-and-Only Susana," among others. Manolito's sociologist mother has concerns about his behavior so he spends some time telling the school psychologist his life story. To be sure, the protagonist is a wild, spunky, dramatic, comical sort of character sure to be popular with children, who will probably find him, in Manolito's own inimitable words, a "whole lotta cool." Lively cartoon illustrations are scattered throughout.-Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA

Kirkus Reviews
Reminiscent of the hero of Rene Goscinny's Nicholas (2005), Manolito is a small, unpopular ten-year-old who unwittingly wreaks havoc in his Madrid neighborhood. In episodic chapters, the "chatterbox who's misunderstood" describes his breezy adventures defending himself from the school bully, arguing with his best friend, Big Ears, over the strong-willed One-and-Only Susana, warding off a mugger and bringing world peace-or at least a stunned moment of silence-to the town's costume contest. But no matter how bad things get, the boy's roommate, "unconditional ally" and "whole lotta cool" Grandpa Nicolas is ready to take the blame and offer wise sayings that help Manolito make sense of his slightly twisted yet always entertaining world. Although adults will understand the boy's musings and his grandfather's prostate problems more readily than children, this stands as an enjoyable tween read-aloud. Urberuaga's energetic, cartoon-like illustrations add to the hilarity of this import, a classic in its native Spain. (Fiction. 9-12)
