Man's Best Friend

Overview

Man Ray, artist William Wegman's stunning weimaraner, was called "the Charlie Chaplin of dog photography" by The New York Times and "the ideal post-modern photographer's model" by New York magazine. In Wegman's beautiful, vibrantly colored Polaroid photographs, Man Ray dresses as Louis XIV, imitates a bat, poses as Picasso's Old Guitarist, and is variously covered with baby powder, flowers, zebra-print fabric, and tinsel. Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This amusing volume is photographer Wegmen's tribute to Man Ray, not the fellow shutterbug but his dog and partner whom he dressed up as everything from an elephant to an Indian chief. There are also some fine portraits of the dog just as a dog. Great fun, and you can't beat the price. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
From Barnes & Noble
William Wegman's dog images are among the most renowned examples of pop-art photography around today. This is a tribute to Wegman's old grey weimaraner, Man Ray, who died in 1982. Man Ray was Wegman's constant companion on and off the set since the dog was a pup. He grew to be an excellent model and here his owner captures him in surprising poses and settings — hallmarks of all of Wegman's work. Here Man Ray dresses as Louix XIV, imitates a bat, poses as Picasso's Old Guitarist, and is by turns covered with baby powder, flowers, zebra-print fabric, and tinsel. Despite it all, Man Ray maintains his graceful calm, stressing the underlying irony of Wegman's photos. 40 photographs, most in full color. 10 1/4" x 12 1/4".
