Overview

How to Divorce with Grace, a Little Class, and a Lot of Common Sense

Sam Margulies, one of the most experienced mediators in the country, shares his experience to help men make this unpleasant process as quick and amicable as possible. His suggestions on how to manage this turbulent period will significantly minimize the effects of divorce on the separating couple, and on any children in the relationship. Taking into consideration custody issues, and giving specific financial and legal advice, men will find information about how to choose a lawyer, how to deal with a pre-nup, and when and when not to go to trial.

Margulies explores all the elements that make for a good, fair divorce, as well as the importance of timing and the decision to get counseling. He also explains how to avoid a legal mess, the long term implications of alimony and child support, dividing up property, and how to negotiate the final agreement.

In A Man's Guide to a Civilized Divorce, Margulies helps men avoid the treacherous waters of divorce and illustrates how with the right advice, one can actually come through the process in pretty good shape.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This book targets men who have children, have been married for a number of years, and are considering divorce. Lawyer, teacher, and mediation practitioner Margulies (Getting Divorced Without Ruining Your Life) covers the current law, coming to the decision to split, moving out, dividing assets, structuring child support and alimony, and conducting negotiations. He uses specific examples of issues that often arise and demonstrates ways to work through them that are designed to reduce acrimony and help create equitable solutions. There is an excellent chapter on budgeting and its use in determining support levels and another with a thorough treatment of how mediation works. The author gives equal time to legal, practical, and emotional issues and offers advice that projects common sense and fairness. Recommended for most public libraries.-Joan Pedzich, Harris Beach LLP, Rochester, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

    Informative, Well-Written, Humane

This book is a must-read for any man who is going through a divorce and wants to emerge with his emotions, finances and family relationships intact. The book presents easy-to-follow guidance that enables families--especially children--to weather the storm with minimal scars and maximum adjustment. Divorce is a difficult transition, and this book shepherds readers through the emotional, familial, practical, financial and personal challenges with clarity, comfort and some humor as well. I will certainly recommend it to clients and friends (both male and female).
